The Skin Microbiome, Explained Simply

The term «microbiome» gets used a lot, but it’s worth understanding what it actually means for your skin. Your skin’s surface hosts a vast, living community of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms. Far from being a problem, this ecosystem is a key part of how healthy skin functions.

A protective ecosystem

A balanced skin microbiome helps maintain the skin barrier, keeps the surface at a healthy pH, and can crowd out less desirable microbes. When that balance is disrupted — by harsh products, over-cleansing or ingredients that indiscriminately kill bacteria — skin can become more reactive and less comfortable.

What this means for deodorant

Many traditional deodorants rely on broad antibacterial action or alcohol to reduce odour. The trade-off is that they don’t distinguish between the bacteria involved in odour and the beneficial ones your skin depends on.

  • Support the microbiome rather than wiping it out
  • Target odour molecules directly, not just bacteria
  • Protect and strengthen the skin barrier

That’s the principle behind balanced biotech: performance that respects the ecosystem your skin has spent a lifetime building.
